World IP Day: Innovation – Improving Lives

World intellectual property day was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to “raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life” and “to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe”.

This year the aim is to explore how innovation makes lives healthier, safer, and more comfortable, turning problems into progress. WIPO will look at how the intellectual property system supports innovation by attracting investment, rewarding creators, encouraging them to develop their ideas, and ensuring that their new knowledge is freely available so that tomorrow’s innovators can build on today’s new technology.

At Kenna Partners, our Intellectual Property Practice Unit deals with the creation of intellectual property rights, and the commercial exploitation of such rights through registrations, licensing and litigation when necessary. Our lawyers have substantial experience in many areas: Trademark, Copyright, and Trade Secrets. We provide Nigerian and foreign trademark, copyright and patent prosecution, counseling and transactional services with a strategic focus aimed at enabling the Client to achieve their business objectives.

We also assist Clients in protecting intellectual property rights from infringement, counterfeiting, misappropriation and unfair competition. As we celebrate World Intellectual Property Day we should ensure that we learn about the role that intellectual property rights (patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyright) play in encouraging innovation and creativity.
